Bert started in Shell in 1983 at the former Shell Wood River Manufacturing Complex. He progressed through various technical positions, then roles in maintenance and operations, culminating as the site Chemical Plant Manager (benzene, toluene, propylene, and solvents) and Operations Manager (Catalytic Cracking, Alkylation, Hydrotreating, and C3/C4 production).

In 1996 he moved to Houston (Shell Technology Center Houston) as the global Technology Manager for Control Systems Engineering. He progressed through several business management and technical management roles in Equilon (Shell/Texaco/Saudi JV), Shell Global Solutions, and Shell Projects and Technology.

From 2012 to 2018, he was Vice President Engineering & SMART technologies, and had global accountability for software and services used across Shell for process design, project engineering & construction, and facility operational monitoring, control, and optimization.

After a broad scale reorganization within the Projects & Technology organization in 2018, Bert held his final position in Shell through 2021 as Technical IT Program Director with broad accountability for IT in the Surface and Subsurface technology arenas and for strategic systems and programs.
