In 1985 Jan joined a major Dutch engineering and consulting company. Over a 12-year period he acquired extensive consulting and design skills in many branches of industry. Eventually Jan shifted his consulting activities to industrial and process safety.

In 1998, Jan started his private consulting business. In 2004-2005 he followed a postdoc study in Management of Safety, Health and Environment (MoSHE) at Delft University of Technology. Jan is also an accredited Tripod Beta Assessor, Practitioner, and Trainer.
